6-day itinerary
Pollution
Day 1:
-Once everybody has arrived at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport at 7 a.m., we will all meet at the local hotel to discuss the goals we hope to achieve in the next few days while in Phoenix. Then at 10 a.m., we go to the desert washes outside of Phoenix to pick up and dispose of trash. This will make the Sonoran a healthier place for its wildlife.
-At 3 p.m. we arrive back in Phoenix and go to the Natural History Museum of Phoenix, where we will learn about their surrounding environment.
-At 5 p.m. , the group will be taken on a sight-seeing tour through the desert, showcasing its beauty. This will show everyone what is at stake if we, humans, continue to destroy the Sonora's habitat.
Day 2:
-Wake up at 8 am and take a bus to a meeting at the Tucson Border Patrol Station and talk to the officers there. We will discuss what the officers think about the pollution of the Sonoran Desert, and get their opinions on how to further decrease the amount of immigrants traveling across the border and through the desert. This will also be a learning experience for all of us, aside from brainstorming with the officers about how to decrease the waste from immigrants.
-At 1 pm, we will have a meeting in the 2141 East Camelback Road office building in Phoenix. We will meet with an officer of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) named Jon Young. We will talk to him about the BLM's operations of picking up trash, arresting immigrants, and seizing drugs from them. We want Jon to see if he can organize a trash clearing expedition with himself, other BLM officers, and as many Phoenix citizen volunteers as possible. We will suggest to him that after cleaning the trash, he post some of his fellow officers in the polluted washes to monitor it, preventing immigrants from littering in the future.
-At 3 pm, in order to get volunteers for the BLM, we will walk around Phoenix putting up posters. Afterwards, we will go to the Desert Ridge Marketplace and hand out informational wavers to passer-byes.
-At 5 pm after an 8 hour long day of taxing meetings, we will split up into groups and go around the mall doing what we please.
Land Degradation
Day 3:
-Wake up at 7:30 am and help construct a letter and petition to Arizona's governor to protest the proposed construction of the Rosemont Mine in an attempt to preserve some of the precious desert habitat in Phoenix.
-At 12 pm, take a bus ride to the Desert Ridge Marketplace, a popular mall in Phoenix, and set up an informational booth in front of the mall entrance, convincing people to sign our petition. After setting up the booth, we will send a few people from our group to post flyers around Phoenix, convincing them to come to the Desert Ridge Marketplace to sign our petition.
-At 5 pm, we will clean up the booth and go inside the Desert Ridge Marketplace for dinner and a movie.
Day 4:
-Wake up at 7 am and take a bus ride to the Arizona State Office, where you will volunteer for Arizona's Bureau of Land Development:
http://www.blm.gov/az/st/en.html
We will help their ongoing efforts to preserve the desert habitat. Arizona's Bureau of Land Development does all sorts of things to preserve the desert such as forcing citizens to get permits to farm cattle (reduces grazing), having firefighters constantly on patrol to prevent fires, and supporting renewable energy projects. However, we will specifically help them plant native vegetation in their National Conservation Areas until 5 pm. Planting this vegetation will provide hiding cover for animals, keep the topsoil intact, and build/maintain the habitat of the desert.
Endangered Species
Day 5:
-Wake up at 8 A.M. and eat breakfast
-Leave the hotel by bus and arrive at the Phoenix Zoo, a local, non-profit zoo that relies on donations to support hundreds of the Sonoran Desert's endangered species. We will meet with the zoo's tour guide so he can show us around the zoo and educate us about the Sonora's endangered species. For more information about the Phoenix Zoo, please visit: http://www.phoenixzoo.org/support/index.shtml
-At 12 pm, we will take a short bus ride to Phoenix and put up informational flyers in an effort to convince citizens to support the Phoenix Zoo's efforts through donations.
-At 1 pm, we will return to the Desert Ridge Marketplace and host a car was in their parking lot in an effort to raise money to donate to the Phoenix Zoo. When drivers are outside their cars while we wash them, we will talk to them about our cause and inform them of the endangered species in the Sonora, urging them to spread the news and donate to the Phoenix Zoo.
Day 6:
-Wake up at 9 A.M. to go to a volunteer meeting for the Northern Jaguar Project, a non-profit organization that is focused on helping the survival of the Northern Jaguar. For more information please visit http://www.northernjaguarproject.org/.
-After attending the meeting, we will go help the Northern Jaguar Project lay the foundation for the new expansion to the Northern Jaguar's habitat by 12 acres until around 3 p.m.
- At 4 pm, we will go to the Phoenix Sun's basketball game as a final activity to finish up the trip.
-At 8 pm, we will return to the airport and everyone will return home.
